Martín Reyna
Martín Reyna belongs to the generation of painters that in the decade of the eighties dedicated themselves to a painting of expressionist tone, with high load of paint and freedom both in the topics and the way they were done. Towards the end of the decade, that expressive tone became more serene and he started a series of paintings in which the axis was based on the representation of letter H, a letter that in Spanish is mute, of absent sound, through the evocation of topics concerning words that begin with the that letter (home hotel, etc.), in an attempt for the painting to cover this absence. This series would derive later in what today is still the principal topic of his work: the scenery.
From subjective representations of the Pampas, through his paintings of the nineties of houses and trees, up to the representation of nonexistent landscapes, Martín Reyna´s sceneries have been purified up to finding the essential thing behind the image and transforming it, in turn, into a new image.
Either through his works in oil on canvas or his watercolors, Martín Reyna appeals our senses through the use of color: vibrant tones, worked in a mmaner full of gesture give structure to each of these pieces. His last works, the most abstract ones, illustrate his words when he says: " when I paint, I think through painting ".
Martín Reyna (Buenos Aires, 1964), since the year 1987 he has had solo shows in Argentina, France, Brazil, Colombia, USA, and Costa Rica and has participated in numerous collective exhibitions.
